Dirty air out there -maybe time to hit the gym

As we've seen these past few days (even with majestic sunsets caused by films of smoke from the many Norcal wildfires) -- it's still dirty air out there . Forecasts say polluted air will linger in the BA for a few days - so stay indoors lest you risk breathing in stuff that can irritate your lungs. Maybe it's time to hit the gym (I've been doing the elliptical myself pedaling along with Journey's DVD :-). Have fun!

mr manny. thank you for the word of caution. but i think the air in manila where i grew up in is 3x polluted the the BAs. Coupled with dust and diesel engines. Thank God I can still keep up with you guys. :)

You're absolutely right john_m..that's a slip of my long term memory - of those buses, jeepneys and cars with tailpipes spewing out raw, unfiltered smoke..definitely bad air quality 10x worse as you said..but in manila I never did get my heart rate up coupled with heavy breathing climbing up any category 3 climbs - i think (and correct me if i'm wrong) it's this heavy breathing that compounds the effect of polluted air since you have the factors of zone 4/5 heart rate and heavy breathing...haha i like your comment on keeping up you'd probably roll me over now that i haven't ridden for a couple of weeks (been doing the elliptical instead)..happy riding!!

john_m/siclistas - here's a couple of interesting links discussing potential effects of inhaling smoke polluted air - the big impact being inhalation of small particles called pm2.5 which get into the deep inner areas of the lungs because of their size and move into the blood stream which can cause a heart related event.
